BRUSSELS: European Union Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos will present the European Commission’s 2026 enlargement package to the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday, setting out assessments of the progress made by countries seeking to join the bloc.
The presentation, scheduled for 1 p.m. (1200 GMT) on November 4, will cover the Commission’s reports on nine EU candidate countries and one potential candidate country.
The nine candidates are Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Türkiye and Ukraine, while Kosovo remains a potential candidate for membership.
Following the Commission’s assessment of each country’s progress in implementing EU-related reforms, the European Parliament’s standing rapporteurs on foreign affairs will prepare individual country resolutions outlining Parliament’s positions and recommendations on their respective accession paths.
The presentation comes as the European Union faces growing geopolitical pressure to accelerate enlargement amid Russia’s war against Ukraine, instability in its neighbourhood and intensifying global competition.
In a communication published on October 6, the European Commission outlined the internal reforms and policy adjustments the bloc would need to undertake to prepare for a larger European Union.
The document argued that the war in Ukraine and wider geopolitical developments had reinforced the strategic importance of building a stronger and more united Europe, placing enlargement among the EU’s priorities.
Kos’s presentation to the committee is scheduled to take place in Brussels on Wednesday.
