BRUSSELS: European Parliament lawmakers will vote on Wednesday on proposed European Union rules aimed at tightening controls on chemicals used to manufacture illegal drugs, seeking to close loopholes that criminals exploit to obtain drug precursors.
The vote, scheduled for 9.45 a.m. on November 4, will take place during a joint meeting of the Parliament’s International Trade and Civil Liberties committees in Brussels.
The proposed legislation would bring certain so-called designer drug precursors under specific regulatory controls and allow authorities to impose restrictions more quickly on newly identified substances.
The measures are intended to prevent criminal networks from exploiting gaps in existing regulations by switching to alternative chemicals that can be used in the production of illegal drugs.
Lawmakers will also vote on whether to open negotiations with EU member states on the proposed legislation.
The file, registered as procedure 2025/0384(COD), has Nicolas Bay, a French member of the European Conservatives and Reformists group, and Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz, a Polish member of the European People’s Party, as rapporteurs.
The vote forms part of a wider meeting of the European Parliament’s International Trade Committee on November 4 and 5, which will also examine EU trade relations with China and Ukraine, potential trade measures against products from Israeli settlements and sustainable development.
The joint committee meeting is scheduled to take place in the Antall building, room 2Q2, in Brussels.
